Design study aimed for creating certain enclosed volums with the intersect command
This tutorial is the second part of the "How to..." series of posts and this week we will see how to use a Design Study inside Solidworks in order to find the right dimensions for our model so that the enclosed volume that we aim to create is going to have the right volume and/or mass etc...
This time I am going to show you TWO diffirent examples for everyone to understand the procedure better! The model itself that you will have doesn't matter as much as long as the correct steps and desicions are taken.
1a)Load or create model
The first example is a tank! We want the volume inside it to be a certain volume and we want it to be created without any mathematical calculations from our part.
2a) Show features annotations
First of all, click on the Annotations folder in the "Features Manager Tree" and click on "Show features Dimensions" just like the pic shows. This will help us later.
3a) Setting the parameters for the Design Study
Next, go to the Evaluate Tab ( if you can't see it right click in the Command Manager's tab and click it) and click on the "Design Study" icon and then click on "Parameters". As you can see in the pic above the "Parameters" window will appear. Typing each parameter's name in each row and choosing the "category" of it (this time they are dimensions) you can set the "settings", let's say, that the software will change in order to calculate the right set of "settings" to get the result you will specify. Think this steps through with great care because these parameters are going to be very important for the integrity of your study. Remember that the parameters you see in the pic above are just an example! Each case is diffirent. All you have to do is type the name, choose the category (Dimensions) and click on the certain Dimensions you want to alter later on.
4a) Creating a sensor
Our next step is going to be to create a sensor. A sensor inside Solidworks is...well what the name says...a sensor. You can set it to monitor a certain quality of your model. All you have to do is right click on the "Sensor" icon in the "Feature Manager tree" and click on "add sensor". In these examples we will work with a "mass sensor type". There are other choises we can choose from, but we won't mess around with them now. Next in the "properties" tab we will choose the body we want to monitor and the certain quality, in this case VOLUME. We have to note that you can change the units in the Options. This sensor will be used later in order to set a certain goal for our study so that the volume of the enclosed body will be a of a certain ammount.
5a) Preparing the Design Study
Click on the "Design Study" icon, in the "Evaluate" tab and you will start setting the parameters for the study to run. The "Variables" are the parameters that you have set and there are certain options on the way they will change. You can choose the "range" option, in which the software will alter the value of the parameters on it's own creating a varying ammount of scenarios. The "range with steps" option is the same as before with the diffirence though that each scenario will be diffirent than before in a certain ammount that you will spescify. In both options you will have to set a starting and ending value for each parameter. Note that in these examples will not mess around with the "constraints" options. In the second red box from the pic above we will set the "goals" option. Choose the sensor you have created and next to it click on "is exactly" and type in the certain ammount you want. This step ensures your whole design will be changed so that the body you want will be as closed as possible to your certain ammount!
After hitting run, Solidworks will run the diffirent scenarios and will provide you with an optimal solution. You can see all the diffirent versions by double clicking on the top row of each case. Bare in mind though that many times the solution will be an approximation and the goal will not be met 100%. Normally it takes a lot of tries in order to set the study the proper way for it to show good results. As you can see bellow you can even create graphs showing how each factor affects with the goal you have set. These can be created by right clicking on the results folder icon on the left and choosing the type of graph you want.
1b) 2nd example: CUP
In this example you can how the study works in the same allthough the model is created in diffirent way. Notice in the pic above, the intersect feature, the sensor created just like before and also that the sketch used to create the cup is vissible for you to see the dimensions that will be set later as the parameters. Your dimensions have to be fully constrained in each in order for the study to be fuctional. Below you can see the diffirent parameters set based on the dimensions above. Remember, diffirent model, same procedure
2b) Setting the Design Study/ results
Just like before, the goal is the same, achieve a certain volume for the water inside the cup! The parameters though are diffirent than before. Again you can choose the way that suits your case better for the the way the parameters are going to change (range, number, range with step). Remember that if you choose the option of "range with a certain step" there is the possibility that the resulting scenarios would be too many and the software won't be able to run them all. Set up your study with care. The results in this case can be below:
One last thing to note is that you can change the options of the "Design Study" through the options icon on the top of the "Design study" tab!
